Step 1 of 8: How to get started with Product Loading: Simple Pit Base Unit

PL1.1: Create a new BIM Component by copying an existing One

Written by Alexandra Göttert

Typical Processes

Create a new component in the DigiPara BIM Library by copying a similar existing component, giving it its own description, and adjusting its simplified 3D geometry in the DigiPara Liftdesigner Developer Work Area.

Prerequisites

  • DigiPara Liftdesigner and DigiPara Liftdesigner Datamanager are installed, with write access to the DigiPara BIM Library data pool you want to extend.

  • A project is open in Liftdesigner containing a BIM component that is similar to the one you want to create (e.g. the same component type from a different manufacturer or library).

  • You know, or can look up, the manufacturer / BIM library and the RID number of that similar component.

Steps

1.) Find a similar BIM component and note its manufacturer and RID. In DigiPara Liftdesigner, select the component that is closest to what you want to create. In its Properties window, note the Manufacturer (under [0020] General) and the RID (under [4210] Product Administration) — you'll need both to locate the same record in the Datamanager.

2.) Copy the component in DigiPara Liftdesigner Datamanager. Open the corresponding data pool and table in the Datamanager, select the row for the component (matching the RID from step 1), and click Copy BIM Components on the Home ribbon. Step through the 3-step copy wizard, then click Close & Open Copy to finish the copy and immediately open the new record.

3.) Edit the meta data of the copied component. With the new record open in Edit Mode, give it its own, specific description (and sub-description) so it's distinguishable from the source component in the library. Save by opening a new table tab to store the new content in the database.

The pen icon at the beginning of the data row indicates edit mode. Open a new table to save the new content in the database.

4.) Load the edited component in DigiPara Liftdesigner. Open the Select Product dialog (component navigator) in Liftdesigner. If the new DigiPara BIM Library entry was saved correctly, it now appears under its manufacturer node with the description you entered in step 3.

5.) Load the Developer Work Area and adjust the simplified 3D geometry. Select the new component in an existing view frame and click Develop this BIM Component on the Develop BIM Components ribbon tab.

This opens the Developer Work Area (with predefined developer view frames) and, alongside it, a Developer LOD View sheet.

Use the Explanation of Parameters and Values drawing that loads automatically (from ...\dcc\DataPool\developer\dwg\) as a reference for what each 3D parameter controls.

Select individual profiles in the developer sections to isolate them, then use the profile's Properties window (Size, Position, Options) to set fixed values, 3D parameters, or equations combining both — this keeps the profile correctly positioned if the component's overall size changes later.

Colored coordinate system = Size coordinates

Gray coordinate system = Position coordinates & BIM Component base point

The Additional Objects docking window gives you a full list of all active or inactive objects like the profiles and points the component consists of, and lets you copy or delete them.

Pitfall: The gray-colored 3D parameters shown in a profile's Properties window (e.g. PBU_DY, PBU_DZ) come from the DigiPara BIM Library and can only be edited via the Datamanager, not directly in Liftdesigner. After changing one in the Datamanager, reload the component in Liftdesigner to see the new value.

Using 3D Parameter and equations for the correct profile location is recommended for having the profile always on the right place, in the case the BIM Component size is changed.

6.) Save the BIM component back into the DigiPara BIM Library. On the Develop BIM Components ribbon tab, click Save this BIM Component, then choose Update the existing BIM component (DigiPara BIM Library). Do this after each processing step on the component's geometry, not only at the very end.

Result

A new, independent component exists in the DigiPara BIM Library with its own description, RID, and profile group, showing your adjusted simplified 3D geometry — ready to be used in projects or extended further with dynamic properties, product options, or component rules.
