Step 10 of 14: Convert CAD Occurrences to Simplified Profile(s)

PL3.10: Convert CAD Models to Liftdesigner Profiles

Written by Alexandra Göttert

Changing the car width won't reshape a plain CAD model — this step converts the relevant CAD parts into native, parametric Liftdesigner profiles so they can adapt to the cabin size.

Prerequisites

  • The CAD models for the left and right sides of the car frame are positioned dynamically, aligning with the car width rather than following a fixed value.

Steps

1.) Convert a CAD occurrence to a profile via the Occurrences docking window. Open the Occurrences docking window for the car frame, expand its tree to the sub-part you want to make dynamic (e.g. a top or bottom construction piece), right-click it, and choose Convert to Profile(s).

2.) Adjust the new profile's shape and orientation. On the Develop BIM Components ribbon tab, use the Profile Shape ribbon group to align the profile's shape — this is a different function from the Orientation group, since it aligns only the profile's shape without rotating the whole profile.

3.) Customize the converted profile's size using a 3D parameter. Select the new profile and, in its Properties window, replace its inherited fixed size value with a formula built from DigiPara Liftdesigner 3D parameters — for example, 110 + Car width + 2*Wall thickness + 2*Distance between the guides.

4.) Confirm "Picking selects parent" for the remaining CAD models, and save. For any CAD models still present alongside the new profile, confirm Picking selects parent is set to Yes in the Properties window, so the car frame — not a sub-model — is what gets selected in non-developer view frames. Then save the finished component into the DigiPara BIM Library, checking the items to be saved in the save wizard.

Result

The converted part of the car frame now reshapes itself automatically with the cabin width, instead of staying fixed like a plain CAD model.
