Prerequisites
You know the main project value nodes (L_Projects., L_StandardTab., Shaft., FLL.).
Steps
Copy External$'s from the Data tree
1.) Copy a reference via the context menu. Right-click a Data tree value to create a reference for copying.
2.) Know where project references can be used. In annotations, in DWG files — use Copy for Form and in Excel files, .NET/VBA programs — use Copy for Program.
3.) Use a Data tree reference in an annotation. Use the Text Editor's Project tree (similar to the Data tree) — add the reference via a double-click on the tree item, or the OK button.
External$ syntax and expressions
4.) Reference the description of the currently selected component. The Me. prefix is a placeholder for the path to the selected component — for example, Me. might resolve to Shaft0.CW.BracketList.Bracket0. for whichever bracket is currently active/selected.
5.) Reference a value from a list object's parent. For example, the list object's COUNT value: Me.Parent. is the path from the active component to the value belonging to its parent component, letting you select the parent node's COUNT value.
6.) Build an adjustable annotation from a Data tree reference. For example, referencing the landing door height directly, so the annotation always shows the current value.
Result
You can copy a Data tree reference for use in annotations, DWG files, Excel files, or .NET/VBA programs, insert one directly into an annotation via the Text Editor's Project tree, and write External$ expressions using Me. and Me.Parent. to reference the selected component and its parent.
