Step 14 of 17: Use Special Values and Calculations with External$'s

A3.14: Define Calculations using External$'s

Written by Alexandra Göttert

Prerequisites

  • You can copy External$'s from the Data tree and reference the selected component and its parent.

Steps

1.) Calculate a value using External$'s. Calculations start with a # (number sign). For example, the car area: \;#[.2] External$("Shaft0.Car.CW") * External$("Shaft0.Car.CD") / 1000000\; sqm. Calculations can be combined with leading or trailing text, separated by a backslash-semicolon (\;).

2.) Calculate a force value entered via Main Project Data. For example: F3: \;# External$("Me.Force0.FZ")/1000\; kN — forces are entered via Main Project Data.

3.) Confirm the calculated result on the drawing. Check that the calculated value displays correctly on the view frame or annotation.

Result

You can build annotations that calculate a value from External$ references — combining arithmetic, units, and surrounding text using the # and \; syntax.
