Step 4 of 8: Add toggleable Product Options to a BIM Component

PL1.4: Add Product Options to a BIM Component

Written by Alexandra Göttert

Give a BIM component alternative profiles — such as different fixing variants — that users can switch on or off in DigiPara Liftdesigner, so one component can represent several product variants.

Prerequisites

  • A BIM component already exists in the DigiPara BIM Library, with a profile group.

  • You know which alternative profiles (e.g. two different fixing brackets) the component should be able to switch between.

Steps

1.) Prepare the new product options in DigiPara Liftdesigner Datamanager. Open the component's profile group and switch to the Global sub grouping tab. Add one record per option (e.g. "Fixing Option 1", "Fixing Option 2") — each gets its own designation number automatically.

2.) Add a new profile in the Developer Work Area for each option. In DigiPara Liftdesigner, open the Developer Work Area and use Add Profile on the Develop BIM Components ribbon tab. The new profile is placed at the component's base point.

3.) Orient, size, and position the profile. Use the X / Y / Z orientation buttons to rotate the profile into place, then define its size and position in the profile's Properties window using fixed values, 3D parameters, or equations of both. For a mirrored counterpart (e.g. the opposite fixing), copy the finished profile (Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V), then flip the sign of its position equation and re-orient it — existing equations can be copied between profiles the same way.

Find and select the copied profile in the Breadcrumb list located under the BIM Component.

4.) Assign each profile to its product option. Select each profile and, in its Properties window under [0024] Product Options, set This Object belongs to Product Option to the matching option from step 1.

5.) Save the component and test the options. Save the BIM component back into the DigiPara BIM Library (Save this BIM Component → Update the existing BIM component). Reopen the component in Liftdesigner and, under [0024] Product Options → Selected Product Options, add or remove the check mark next to each option to switch the corresponding profile on or off.

Result

The BIM component now offers two or more selectable product options. Adding or removing a check mark in the Selected Product Options field shows or hides the corresponding profile, letting one component cover several physical variants.
