Step 5 of 8: Add a Dynamic Rule to a BIM Component

PL1.5: Add logic to a BIM component

Written by Alexandra Göttert

Add logic to a BIM component so that a dynamic property automatically switches related product options on or off — for example, so a "Height" property automatically enables the correct fixing option — instead of requiring users to set both manually.

Prerequisites

  • A BIM component with an existing dynamic property (see Add a Dynamic Property to a BIM Component) and two or more product options (see Add Product Options to a BIM Component) that you want to link together.

Pitfall: Rules are stored within the component's profile group and are intended to affect only that specific component. Creating rules that alter component dimensions elsewhere—or at a higher level—within the data tree hierarchy is strongly discouraged.

Steps

1.) Open the Rule Editor and activate Developer mode. Select your BIM component and click Rule Editor on the Develop BIM Components ribbon tab. In the Rule Editor, select the Developer radio button at the bottom of the window — without it, rule components cannot be added.

2.) Add a rule component and give it a description. Right-click your component's row in the Rule Components list and choose Add Rules Component → Add ... LDXRule. In the new rule row, enter a clear, unique description (e.g. "Fixing Options and Width by Height").

3.) Open the rule matrix and add subgroup columns. Click into the rule's PGR_MATRIX field. In the matrix editor, use Add Subgroup to add one S column for each product option the rule should control, alongside the existing condition (C1) and assignment (A1) columns.

4.) Define the condition and assignment for each case. In C1, reference the dynamic property the rule should react to (drag it in from the DigiPara Liftdesigner Project Tree, e.g. LD("Me.L_PitBaseUnitTab.PBU_DZ")), then list the values you want to distinguish (e.g. 50, 75, 100). In A1, reference the 3D parameter the rule should set for each of those values (e.g. Me.L_PitBaseUnitTab.PBU_DY), and enter the corresponding value in each row (e.g. 180, 200, 220).

5.) Set each product option active or inactive per row. In the S1, S2, … columns, choose Active or Inactive for each option in each row, so that the correct product option is switched on for each condition value.

6.) Check, save, and test the rule. Click the Check and Save Matrix button, confirm saving the rule changes to the database, then click Save All to Database. Close the Rule Editor and change the dynamic property on the BIM component in Liftdesigner — the linked product option (and any other assigned parameter) should now switch automatically.

Organize a BIM Component's Options and Rules

Enable or disable a BIM component's existing product options and rules directly from the Options and rules docking window, and — for components with many of either — group them into a clear folder structure so they stay easy to find.

Steps

7.) Open the Options and rules docking window. Select your BIM component in DigiPara Liftdesigner and open Options and rules from the Windows group of the ribbon. The window lists the component's existing Options (top) and Rules (bottom) as separate, check-marked lists.

8.) Enable or disable an option or rule. Add or remove the check mark next to any option or rule to switch it on or off for the component — this has the same effect as changing Selected Product Options in the Properties window (for options) or toggling LDXRULE_ACTIVE in the Rule Editor (for rules), but without opening either of those separately.

Pitfall: If an option is controlled by a rule, its check mark will be grayed out and follow the rule automatically — see step 4.

9.) Group a large number of options or rules into folders. For components with many product options, open the profile group's Global sub grouping tab in the Datamanager and fill in the PGT_STRUCTURE1_DESC / PGT_STRUCTURE2_DESC columns (e.g. "Pitbase Example 1" / "Fixings") for each option. For many rules, do the same in the Rule Editor's rule row, using its structure description fields (e.g. "Dim. assignment, Geometry enabler" / "Fixing options, width"). Reopen the Options and rules window — the options and rules now appear nested under the folder names you entered.

10.) Mark rule-controlled options for clarity. For any option whose check mark is set automatically by a rule (see Add a Rule to a BIM Component), extend its description in the Global sub grouping table with the suffix "(auto)" — e.g. "Fixing Option 2 (auto)". DigiPara Liftdesigner then displays that option grayed out in the Options and rules window, signaling that it shouldn't be toggled by hand.

Result

The BIM component now switches its product options and related parameters automatically based on the dynamic property's value, instead of requiring users to set each option by hand.

The component's options and rules can be switched on or off from a single docking window, and — where the list is long — are organized into a readable folder structure with automatically controlled options clearly marked.
